2 Dog-Friendly Beaches in Hilton Head, SC That You’ll Want to Visit

Burkes Beach

Burkes Beach in Hilton Head is one of the most popular hot spots on the island for dogs. Your animals will be welcome to join you along the shore or take a refreshing dip in the water. Many of the visitors to this beach are dog lovers, so you may meet like-minded new friends during your visit. It is although within walking distance of Chaplain Community Park, which includes an off-leash dog park!

During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), dogs are only permitted at Burkes Beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m.


Alder Lane Beach Access

If you and your furry friend would like to get away from the crowds, Alder Lane Beach Access is a great option! Unlike typical Hilton Head beaches, Alder Lane boasts a serene and quiet setting not far from South Forest Beach. It’s the perfect place for you and your dog to relax, play, swim, and enjoy the sunshine.

During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), dogs are only permitted at Burkes Beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m.


Dog Beach Rules

If you’re planning on visiting one of the dog-friendly beaches in Hilton Head, SC, there are some rules to follow to ensure everyone has a safe and fun experience.

  • Pets are not permitted between 10 am & 5 pm from Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

  • Pets must be on a leash between 10 am & 5 pm from April 1 through Thursday before Memorial Day & between 10 am & 5 pm from Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30th.

  • Pets must be on a leash or under voice control at all other times.

  • You are required to remove and dispose of your animal's waste.


Keep Your Pet Safe in the Heat

Since Hilton Head boasts a subtropical climate, temperatures can climb very quickly, especially during the summer season. Here are some tips to keep your pet cool, safe, and happy during your visit to the beaches.

  • Hot sand and pavement can be painful on your dog’s sensitive paws. Stay away from these hot spots or alternate between hot surfaces and cold surfaces.

  • Ensure your pet stays well hydrated! Bring extra water with you and a bowl for them to drink out of. Make sure it is available to them at all times!

  • Be careful not to over-exercise your pet! If you notice excessive panting, foaming at the mouth, or bright pink gums, ensure they lay down to rest and drink water immediately.

  • Make sure shade is made available! Whether it be a beach umbrella or underneath a shady tree, providing your pet with a place to cool off outside of the sunshine is very important.
