History of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra

In 1982, just as Hilton Head Island was beginning to boom in popularity, a small group of islanders came together to play classical music. It all began with just 14 musicians sharing a common interest. As the years went by, that small group developed into the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra with over 70 musicians. Today, the orchestra is recognized as "a vision that stays ahead of the curve” and satisfies a wide diversity of audiences.

Opening Night Gala with Garrick Ohlsson (October 10, 2016)

This opening celebration will feature the work of Beethoven and one of the world’s most recognized pianists, Garrick Ohlsson.

Viva Espana (November 13-14, 2016)

Immerse in the vibrant Latin culture with traditional works of music by Gershwin, Lalo and de Falla.

Holiday Pops! (December 11-12, 2016)

Enlighten in the holiday season with one of the Lowcountry’s favorite traditions. This heartwarming production features the sounds from the animated film, "The Snowman.”

Saint-Saens Organ Symphony (January 15-16, 2017)

The renowned organist from the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head will be performing for this masterpiece of strings and piano.

Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony (January 29-30, 2017)

This epic portrayal of fate and triumph is portrayed with a stirring masterwork of instruments. It will also be featuring the talents of ChangYon Shin, a 2016 First Prize Winner of the HHIPC.

Lowcountry Pops! A Gullah Celebration (February 19-20, 2017)

Experience the Lowcountry’s heritage like never before! Music and dancing will tell the story of our rich culture and history.

Mendelssohn Italian Symphony (March 26-27, 2017)

HHSO clarinetist, Charles Messersmith, will be performing the dazzling Weber Clarinet Concerto No. 1.

Brahms: A German Requiem (April 23-24)

A full 100-voice chorus will reveal the tale of one of the most revered works of orchestral repertoire in history.

Beethoven Seventh Symphony (May 7-8, 2017)

The season end with Jane Coop, one of Canada’s premiere interpreters of Mozart, performing Beethoven’s beloved classic.

Since 2000, the orchestra has given young musicians under the age of 18 the chance to perform on their stage. Its purpose is to provide talented musicians with confidence and inspiration to pursue their goals in the world of music.
