How to beat the summer heat on Hilton Head Island

We all love the Lowcountry, but let’s be honest: by mid-July, the Hilton Head humidity starts to feel less like a coastal breeze and more like a warm, wet blanket. While our island is famous for its world-class beaches, golf courses, and tennis courts, occasionally you will need indoor activities so you can escape the heat.

Whether you are a parent trying to keep the kids entertained or a visitor looking for a break from the sun, here are our favorite ways to beat the heat on Hilton Head Island this summer.

Escape to the Sandbox – The Children’s Museum

https://thesandbox.org/

80 Nassau St

Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29928

If you have little ones, The Sandbox Children’s Museum at Lowcountry Celebration Park is a lifesaver. It’s designed specifically for interactive, indoor play. From the flight simulator to the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Castle, kids can burn off energy in a climate-controlled environment while learning about our island’s unique ecosystem.

Take a trip to the movies

Park Plaza Movies

33 Office Park Road

Hilton Head Island, SC, 29928

There is nothing quite like the blast of A/C in a dark theater when it’s 95°C outside. Head over to Northridge Cinema 10 or Coligny Theatre for a matinee. Check out the luxury recliners at Northridge Cinema, it’s the ultimate way to chill for a few hours. We also suggest Park Plaza movie theater for a unique experience.  Park Plaza is a hidden gem that offers an atmosphere far removed from the sterile, corporate feel of modern megaplexes. It’s widely known for its quirky, upscale living room vibe, complete with cozy reclining seats and a surprisingly sophisticated cafe and bar where you can grab a glass of wine or a craft beer to enjoy during the film. For true personality and an island feel, we love Park Plaza for a movie!

Bluffton, SC 29926

Located just over the bridge in Bluffton, Station 300 is the go-to spot for high-energy indoor fun. With state-of-the-art bowling lanes and a massive arcade, it’s a great spot to beat the heat or rain and be indoors for some fun.

Get Creative at The Art Café

https://www.artcafehhi.com/

5 Lagoon Rd, 2nd floor,

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Channel your inner artist at The Art Cafe near Coligny Plaza. You can spend a quiet, cool afternoon painting your own pottery. It’s a fantastic way to slow down, stay hydrated, and walk away with a handmade souvenir of your HHI summer. Be sure to let them know when you are leaving so they can fire the kiln and have your painted pottery ready – they typically need 2-3 days, so make sure you go early during your vacation.

Explore the Coastal Discovery Museum

https://www.coastaldiscovery.org/

70 Honey Horn Drive

Hilton Head Island, SC 29926

While some of the Coastal Discovery Museum is outdoors, their indoor galleries at Honey Horn are fascinating. You can learn about Gullah history, local wildlife, and Lowcountry art without breaking a sweat.

More ways to beat the heat this summer

Shift Your Schedule

Beyond shifting your schedule to avoid the peak heat between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, consider a visit to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve which offers deep natural shade and makes outdoor movement much more manageable.  There are miles of trails in a beautiful setting.

Stay Active on the Water

If you are determined to stay active, getting directly onto the water via a kayak or paddleboard in Shelter Cove or Broad Creek provides access to refreshing cross-breezes and cooler water temperatures.

Shop With A Breeze

If you prefer to shop, the designed breezeways and wind tunnels of Coligny Plaza and Shelter Cove Towne Centre pull the ocean air through shaded walkways, making it easy to duck into the air conditioning as needed.

Golden Hour Glow

Also consider embracing the timing of your activities during the so-called golden hour, about an hour before the sun sets. Heading to the shoreline around 6:30 PM allows you to enjoy a picnic on sand that has finally lost its midday sting while benefiting from a breeze.  Another great way to enjoy the beach!

Cool Off While You Eat

You can visit Snow Cones by Chris, https://www.snoconesbychris.com/ (114 Helmsman Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928)  for gourmet shaved ice or venture off to get ice cream at any one of our numerous ice cream spots on Hilton Head.  For a complete list of ice cream spots, visit this post.
